ALAS1 is a pyridoxal 5’-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme that catalyzes the condensation of succinyl-CoA and glycine to form δ-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), with coenzyme A (CoA) and carbon dioxide (CO2) as by-products. This reaction represents the rate-limiting step in the heme biosynthesis pathway.
