Scientific Background

AMACR is a stereoisomerase that catalyzes the interconversion of ®- and (S)-stereoisomers of α-methyl-branched-chain fatty acyl-CoA esters (such as pristanoyl-CoA and trihydroxycoprostanoyl-CoA) (by similar). This enzyme acts exclusively on coenzyme A thioesters (not free fatty acids) with broad substrate specificity including intermediates in bile acid synthesis and certain anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen), but shows no activity toward 3-methyl-branched or linear-chain acyl-CoAs (by similar).
