Scientific Background

Beclin 1 plays a central role in autophagy and acts as a core subunit of the PI3K complex, mediating the formation of phosphatidylinositol 3-phosphate. Different complex forms are involved in multiple membrane trafficking pathways: PI3KC3-C1 participates in autophagosome initiation, while PI3KC3-C2 is involved in autophagosome maturation and endocytosis. It also regulates degradative endocytic trafficking and is required for the abscission step in cytokinesis, likely in the context of PI3KC3-C2. Beclin 1 is essential for the formation of PI3KC3-C2 but not PI3KC3-C1. by similar: It may contribute to antiviral host defense; the mitochondrial-localized Beclin-1-C 35 kDa fragment can promote apoptosis by inducing mitochondrial translocation of BAX and the release of proapoptotic factors. (Microbial infection) Protects against infection by a neurovirulent strain of Sindbis virus.
