Scientific Background

CD35 is a membrane immune adherence receptor that plays a critical role in the capture and clearance of complement-opsonized pathogens by erythrocytes and monocytes/macrophages. It mediates the binding of these cells to particles and immune complexes that have activated complement, facilitating their elimination from circulation. Additionally, CD35 inhibits spontaneous complement activation by impairing the formation and function of the alternative and classical pathway C3/C5 convertases and acts as a cofactor for factor I-mediated cleavage of C3b to iC3b, C3c, and C3d,g, as well as C4b to C4c and C4d. CD35 also contributes to immune regulation by promoting the generation of regulatory T cells from activated helper T cells upon ligand binding; (by similar microbial infection function) serves as a receptor for Epstein-Barr virus.
