Scientific Background

CEA (Carcinoembryonic Antigen) is a cell surface glycoprotein involved in cell adhesion, intracellular signaling, and tumor progression. It mediates homophilic and heterophilic cell adhesion with other carcinoembryonic antigen-related cell adhesion molecules, such as CEACAM6. CEA functions as an oncogene by promoting tumor progression, including inducing resistance to anoikis in colorectal carcinoma cells. Additionally, CEA serves as a receptor for E. coli Dr adhesins, and binding of these adhesins leads to dissociation of the homodimer.
