Scientific Background

C/EBP Beta is a key transcription factor regulating genes involved in immune and inflammatory responses. It plays significant roles in adipogenesis, gluconeogenesis, liver regeneration, and hematopoiesis, with a consensus recognition site of 5'-T[TG]NNGNAA[TG]-3'. Its activity is modulated by protein interactions and post-translational modifications. During early embryogenesis, it shares redundant functions with CEBPA, promoting mitosis in hepatocytes and adipocytes while inhibiting T-cell proliferation by repressing MYC, thereby aiding T-helper 2 lineage differentiation. It binds regulatory regions of acute-phase and cytokine genes, influencing acute-phase reactions and inflammation. By similarity, it contributes to intracellular bacterial killing. In adipogenesis, it is rapidly expressed and, upon phosphorylation, induces CEBPA and PPARG to activate adipocyte phenotype-related genes. It is critical for ovarian follicle development (By similarity) and restricts osteoclastogenesis by repressing DSPP during odontoblast differentiation (By similarity). Essential for macrophage activation, it also drives immune responses like CD4(+) T-cell activation, granuloma formation, and endotoxin shock.
