Scientific Background

Cytochrome P450 family 51 subfamily A member 1 (CYP51A1), also known as lanosterol 14-alpha demethylase (LDM), is a key endoplasmic reticulum enzyme in cholesterol biosynthesis. Decreased activity of this crucial enzyme impairs liver function, leading to metabolism-associated liver disease and hepatocellular carcinoma (1). Furthermore, studies show that this enzyme, along with several other components in distal cholesterol biosynthesis, is a potential suppressor of ferropotosis (2). Additionally, CYP51A1 was shown to suppress alkalization-induced cell death in a lysosomal pathway in pancreatic cancer cells, demonstrating this enzyme to be a vulnerability in those cells (3).CYP51A1was also identified as a plausible candidate gene for cerebral palsy (CP) (4).Kreft, T. et al.
