Scientific Background

Cripto is a GPI-anchored cell membrane protein involved in the Nodal signaling pathway. Cell-associated CRIPTO functions as a Nodal coreceptor in cis. Shedding of CRIPTO by TMEM8A modulates Nodal signaling by enabling soluble CRIPTO to act as a Nodal coreceptor on other cells (by similar: PubMed:27881714). It may also play a role in determining epiblastic cells that subsequently give rise to the mesoderm (by similar: PubMed:11909953).
