Scientific Background

Homeobox protein DLX-1 (DLX1) is a member of a family of homeobox genes related to theDrosophiladistal-less gene. DLX1 is a transcription factor found in the forebrain of the developing mouse embryo, where it contributes to craniofacial development (1-3). DLX1 also plays a critical role in GABAergic neurogenesis and retinal development (4-7). The DNA-binding activity of DLX1 is mediated by its homeodomain, and DLX1 has been shown to bind to genes that promote neuronal migration and repress neurite growth (8,9). DLX1 expression is regulated by various non-coding RNAs in different cancer types (10-12).Stock, D.W. et al. (1996)Proc Natl Acad Sci USA93, 10858-63.Price, M. et al.
