Scientific Background

DsbA is a protein involved in disulfide bond formation in certain periplasmic proteins such as PhoA or OmpA. It functions by transferring its disulfide bond to other proteins and becomes reduced in the process. DsbA is reoxidized by DsbB. Additionally, DsbA is essential for pilus biogenesis. PhoP-regulated transcription is redox-sensitive and activated when the periplasm becomes more reducing (e.g., in dsbA/dsbB deletion or upon dithiothreitol treatment). In this pathway, MgrB acts between DsbA/DsbB and PhoP/PhoQ. by similar: The disulfide bond formation mechanism is linked to DsbB's reoxidation function.
