EpCAM may function as a physical homophilic interaction molecule between intestinal epithelial cells (IECs) and intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs) at the mucosal epithelium, providing an immunological barrier as the first line of defense against mucosal infections. It plays a role in embryonic stem cell proliferation and differentiation, and upregulates the expression of FABP5, MYC, and cyclins A and E. by similar: likely participates in immune regulation of other epithelial cells through analogous mechanisms.
