Scientific Background

Factor XIIIA, or fibrin stabilizing factor, is activated by thrombin and Ca2+to a protransglutaminase in the final step of the blood coagulation cascade that cross-links fibrin chains (1). This enzyme catalyzes the gamma-glutamyl-epsilon-lysine cross-linking between fibrin molecules, stabilizing the fibrin clot (1,2). It is widely expressed in dermal dendritic cells (3). High expression of Factor XIIIA positive cells can be indicative of inflammatory conditions such as lichen planus and psoriasis (4).Muszbek, L. et al.
