Scientific Background
CD178 is a cytokine that binds to the TNFRSF6/FAS receptor, transmitting apoptotic signals into cells. It is involved in cytotoxic T-cell-mediated apoptosis, natural killer cell-mediated apoptosis, and T-cell development. CD178 initiates fratricidal/suicidal activation-induced cell death (AICD) in antigen-activated T-cells, contributing to the termination of immune responses (by similar). TNFRSF6/FAS-mediated apoptosis also plays a role in peripheral tolerance induction (by similar). Additionally, CD178 binds to TNFRSF6B/DcR3, a decoy receptor that blocks apoptosis. It induces FAS-mediated activation of NF-kappa-B, initiating non-apoptotic signaling pathways (by similar). While CD178 can induce apoptosis, it does not appear to be essential for this process. Its cytoplasmic form also inhibits gene transcription.
