NAGK encodes a member of the N-acetylhexosamine kinase family. N-acetyl-D-glucosamine kinase catalyzes the conversion of N-acetyl-D-glucosamine to N-acetyl-D-glucosamine 6-phosphate, and is the major mammalian enzyme which recovers amino sugars.
