GKLF is a transcription factor capable of functioning as both an activator and a repressor. It binds to the 5'-CACCC-3' core sequence and its own gene promoter to activate self-transcription. This factor regulates key transcription factors during embryonic development, playing critical roles in maintaining embryonic stem cells and suppressing their differentiation. GKLF is essential for establishing skin barrier function, postnatal ocular surface maturation/maintenance, epithelial cell differentiation, and potentially skeletal/kidney development. It also contributes to p53/TP53 transcriptional downregulation. by similar: Shares partial functional overlap with other KLF family transcription factors.
