Scientific Background

Metallothioneins (MTs) are low-molecular-weight, cysteine-rich proteins that bind heavy metals and scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS). In the brain, MTs play a critical role in maintaining metal ion homeostasis, particularly for zinc and copper, and in protecting neurons from oxidative damage. Elevated expression of MTs in astrocytes and microglia has been observed in response to neurotoxic insults, including inflammation, ischemia, and protein aggregation. Their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties make MTs key players in the defense against neurodegenerative processes in Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, and prion diseases. Enhancing MT expression or mimicking their function may offer therapeutic benefits by mitigating oxidative stress and preserving neuronal integrity.
