Scientific Background

PCGF6 is a transcriptional repressor that may modulate histone H3K4Me3 levels by activating the KDM5D histone demethylase. It is a component of the Polycomb group (PcG) multiprotein PRC1-like complex, a class of complexes required to maintain the transcriptionally repressive state of many genes, including Hox genes, throughout development. The PcG PRC1 complex acts through chromatin remodeling and histone modification, mediating monoubiquitination of histone H2A 'Lys-119', thereby heritably altering chromatin expressibility. Within the PRC1-like complex, PCGF6 regulates the ubiquitin ligase activity of RNF2.
