Scientific Background

PGC1 β acts as a stimulator of transcription factors and nuclear receptor activities. It enhances the transcriptional activity of estrogen receptor alpha, nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1), and glucocorticoid receptor in the presence of glucocorticoids. Overexpression of PGC1 β increases basal oxygen consumption and mitochondrial number, suggesting a potential role in constitutive non-adrenergic-mediated mitochondrial biogenesis. It may also be involved in fat oxidation, non-oxidative glucose metabolism, and the regulation of energy expenditure. In skeletal muscle, PGC1 β induces the expression of PERM1 in an ESRRA-dependent manner.
