Scientific Background
PRMT7 is an arginine methyltransferase capable of catalyzing the formation of omega-N monomethylarginine (MMA) and symmetrical dimethylarginine (sDMA), with a preference for MMA production. It specifically mediates the symmetrical dimethylation of arginine residues in small nuclear ribonucleoproteins Sm D1 (SNRPD1) and Sm D3 (SNRPD3), a process essential for snRNP core particle assembly and biogenesis. PRMT7 also symmetrically dimethylates histone H4 at 'Arg-3' to generate H4R3me2s. In gene imprinting, PRMT7 is recruited by CTCFL to the H19 imprinted control region (ICR), where it methylates histone H4 to form H4R3me2s, potentially facilitating DNA methyltransferase recruitment. The enzyme may further contribute to embryonic stem cell (ESC) pluripotency. In vitro, PRMT7 can methylate histone H2A and myelin basic protein (MBP), though the physiological relevance remains unclear.
