Scientific Background

PTDSS2 is an enzyme that catalyzes a base-exchange reaction, replacing the polar head group of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) or phosphatidylcholine (PC) with L-serine. It primarily converts phosphatidylethanolamine but does not act on phosphatidylcholine (PubMed:19014349). The enzyme can utilize both phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) plasmalogen and diacyl PE as substrates, with the latter being utilized six times more efficiently, indicating the importance of an ester linkage at the sn-1 position (By similar). Although it shows no preference for sn-1 fatty acids, it exhibits significant preference for docosahexaenoic acid (22:6n-3) over 18:1 or 20:4 at the sn-2 position (By similar).
