Scientific Background
C-terminal-binding protein 2, also known as CTBP2, is a transcriptional co‑repressor, originally discovered to bind to the carboxy-terminus of the human adenovirus E1A protein. CTBP family proteins are encoded by 2 paralogous genes, CTBP1 and CTBP2. CTBPs promote cancer cell migration, apoptosis antagonists, and tumor suppressor genes repressors. CTBP2 has been previously identified as being capable of directing cell migration by repressing PTEN expression and stimulating PI3K activity, which leads to Rac-dependent migration in some cancers. However, another study revealed that inhibiting CTBP2 enhanced stemness and the occurrence of primary ovarian carcinoma, while higher levels of CTBP2 expression correlate with improved overall survival (OS). These observations suggest that CTBP2 has two biological roles in influencing by different partner genes and downstream regulations. Furthermore, the investigations discovered that CTBP2 has a significant correlation between cell metabolism and the etiology of obesity in people.
