Scientific Background

Forkhead box protein P3 (FOXP3) is a transcription factor that plays a role in the development and function of regulatory T cells (Tregs), which are essential for maintaining immune tolerance and preventing autoimmune diseases. FOXP3 is responsible for the transcriptional regulation of genes involved in Treg differentiation and function, ensuring the immune system does not attack the body's own tissues. Mutations or deficiencies in the FOXP3 gene can lead to severe autoimmune disorders, such as immunodysregulation, polyendocrinopathy, enteropathy, X-linked syndrome (IPEX), characterized by widespread inflammation and multi-organ damage. Additionally, FOXP3 has been implicated in cancer biology, where it can act as a tumor suppressor in certain contexts.
