Scientific Background

CD209a, is also known as dendritic cell-specific intercellular adhesion molecule 3-grabbing nonintegrin (DC-SIGN) and CIRE. Of the eight DC-SIGN-related receptors in mice, CD209a is considered the closest homolog to human DC-SIGN (CD209). Although both mouse and human counterparts are expressed on monocyte-derived dendritic cells, expression variation has been noted. Mouse CD209a is found on skin and splenic myeloid cells and is highly expressed on plasmacytoid dendritic cells, while human CD209 is expressed on myeloid dendritic cells, placental macrophages, liver and placental endothelial cells. CD209 binds to ICAM-3 (CD50), ICAM-2 (CD102), and Butyrophilin (BTN2A1), and mediates dendritic cell migration and T cell proliferation. It plays a critical role in capturing and internalizing pathogens such asStreptococcus pneumoniae.
