Scientific Background

Selenium-binding protein 1 (SELENBP1), also known as SBP, is a widely expressed methanethiol oxidase, an enzyme capable of converting methanethiol to hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen peroxide, and formaldehyde (1). SELENBP1 is able to bind selenium, though it is not required for its enzymatic activity; copper, however, is a required cofactor (2). SELENBP1 is reported to act as a tumor suppressor; its expression is downregulated in several types of cancer, such as lung, bladder, and colorectal cancer (3-5).SELENBP1overexpression is associated with schizophrenia. The prefrontal cortex and blood of schizophrenia patients show elevatedSELENBP1gene expression levels, and transgenic mice engineered to express human SELENBP1 in the frontal cortex exhibit a subset of schizophrenia-like phenotypes (6,7).Pol, A. et al.
