Scientific Background

SLP2 is a mitochondrial protein that likely regulates mitochondrial biogenesis and activity by stimulating cardiolipin biosynthesis and binding to cardiolipin-enriched membranes, where it recruits and stabilizes proteins such as prohibitin to organize functional microdomains. It influences diverse biological processes including cell migration, proliferation, T-cell activation, calcium homeostasis, and stress responses via mitochondrial function modulation. SLP2 may negatively regulate mitochondrial calcium efflux to maintain calcium balance and is essential for stress-induced mitochondrial hyperfusion, a pro-survival mechanism boosting ATP production. Additionally, it associates with the T-cell receptor signaling complex to regulate T-cell activation and may contribute to functional domain organization at the plasma membrane.
