Specifications
Scientific Background
SSX2IP belongs to an adhesion system that plays a role in organizing homotypic, interneuronal, and heterotypic cell-cell adherens junctions (AJs). It may connect the nectin-afadin and E-cadherin-catenin systems through alpha-actinin and could be involved in organizing the actin cytoskeleton at AJs via afadin and alpha-actinin (By similarity). The protein is involved in cell movement: it localizes at the leading edge of migrating cells in response to PDGF and is required for leading edge formation and cell motility, possibly through Rac signaling activation (By similarity). Additionally, SSX2IP acts as a centrosome maturation factor, likely by maintaining pericentriolar material integrity and proper microtubule nucleation at mitotic spindle poles. This function partially involves WRAP73, with the SSX2IP:WRAP73 complex proposed to regulate spindle anchoring at the mitotic centrosome. SSX2IP also participates in ciliogenesis and is required for the targeted recruitment of the BBSome, CEP290, RAB8, and SSTR3 to cilia.
