Scientific Background

TERF1 is a protein that binds to the telomeric double-stranded 5'-TTAGGG-3' repeat and negatively regulates telomere length. It participates in the regulation of the mitotic spindle and is a component of the shelterin complex (or telosome), which modulates telomere length and provides protection. The shelterin complex associates with arrays of double-stranded 5'-TTAGGG-3' repeats added by telomerase to shield chromosome ends; in the absence of this protective activity, telomeres become exposed to DNA damage surveillance, leading to inappropriate processing of chromosome termini by DNA repair pathways. by similar: This description aligns with its documented molecular functions and complex mechanisms.
