Scientific Background

VASP (Ena/VASP proteins) are actin-associated proteins involved in processes dependent on cytoskeleton remodeling and cell polarity, including axon guidance, lamellipodial and filopodial dynamics, platelet activation, and cell migration. VASP promotes actin filament elongation by protecting the barbed end of growing filaments from capping and enhancing actin polymerization rates in the presence of capping protein. It stimulates elongation by transferring profilin-bound actin monomers to the barbed end. VASP also plays a role in Listeria monocytogenes' actin-based motility within host cells and regulates actin dynamics in platelets, contributing to platelet aggregation control.
