Scientific Background

YTHDC2 is a 3'-5' RNA helicase that plays a crucial role in the male and female germline by promoting the transition from mitotic to meiotic divisions in stem cells. It specifically recognizes and binds N6-methyladenosine (m6A)-containing RNAs, a modification present at internal sites of mRNAs and some non-coding RNAs, influencing RNA processing efficiency and stability. YTHDC2 ensures the successful progression of the meiotic program in the germline by regulating the levels of m6A-containing RNAs. It functions by binding and promoting the degradation of m6A-containing mRNAs, a process requiring its 3'-5' RNA helicase activity, with RNA degradation potentially mediated by the XRN1 exoribonuclease. YTHDC2 is essential for both spermatogenesis and oogenesis. by similar: promotes meiotic transition, recognizes m6A modification, regulates RNA stability, mediates degradation via XRN1.
