Scientific Background

ZIC 1 functions as a transcriptional activator involved in neurogenesis. It plays critical roles during early CNS organogenesis, dorsal spinal cord development, and cerebellar maturation. This protein regulates the spatial distribution of mossy fiber (MF) neurons within the pontine gray nucleus (PGN), influences MF axon pathway selection, and promotes ipsilateral MF migration toward cerebellar territories. It may participate in shear flow mechanotransduction in osteocytes. ZIC 1 retains nuclear GLI1 and GLI3 in the cytoplasm and binds to the minimal GLI-consensus sequence 5'-TGGGTGGTC-3' (By similarity).
