Scientific Background

TUBB3 is a key member of the tubulin family, forming microtubules primarily composed of alpha- and beta-tubulin heterodimers. Microtubules grow by adding GTP-tubulin dimers at their ends, forming a stabilizing cap. Below this cap, alpha-beta tubulin heterodimers remain in a GDP-bound state due to alpha-tubulin's GTPase activity. TUBB3 plays a critical role in axon guidance and maintenance. The binding of NTN1/Netrin-1 to its receptor UNC5C may dissociate UNC5C from polymerized microtubules, increasing microtubule dynamics and mediating axon repulsion. It also contributes to dorsal root ganglion axon projection toward the spinal cord.
