Abciximab binds to human platelet glycoprotein (GP) IIb/IIIa receptors and inhibits platelet aggregation by preventing the binding of fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor and other adhesion molecules. It also binds to vitronectin (alpha v beta 3) receptors found on platelets, vascular wall endothelial cells and smooth muscle cells.
