STAT6 protein is a transcription factor activated by cytokines, particularly IL4 and IL13, and is critically involved in the Th2-mediated immune response. STAT6 deficiency results in loss of IL4 regulated functions such as Th2 helper T cell differentiation, expression of cell surface markers, T cell proliferation, immunoglobulin class switching to IgE, and partial loss of IL4-mediated cell proliferation. STAT6 mRNA has been detected in peripheral blood lymphocytes and in the colon, intestines, ovaries, prostate, thymus, spleen, kidneys, liver, lungs and placenta.
