Polyclonal Antibodies

Polyclonal Antibodies (pAbs) are a mixture of antibodies derived from multiple B‑cell clones, which can recognize multiple distinct epitopes on an antigen simultaneously. This multi-epitope recognition confers unique advantages: high avidity—multivalent binding forms cross-linked networks, resulting in overall avidity often superior to that of monoclonal antibodies; strong tolerance—recognition is maintained via other epitopes even if a single epitope is mutated or denatured; combined with rapid preparation (direct animal immunization without cell fusion or screening) and low cost (short production cycle and low technical barrier), polyclonal antibodies become an ideal choice for many applications. Compared with mAbs, pAbs show slightly lower specificity (potential cross-reactivity), batch stability affected by individual animal differences, and poorer reproducibility. Nevertheless, their stronger tolerance to denatured antigens and higher overall avidity render them irreplaceable in robust detection scenarios such as immunoprecipitation and Western Blot.
